Pantry Turned Mudroom Nook Reveal

August 9, 2019

Hello friends and happy Friday!! As promised last week, I am finally ready to share the mudroom nook with you guys!

But first–a quick recap for those of you that are swinging by for the first time today. The pantry in our new fixer upper was located in a spot that didn’t make a lot of sense to us. So when we moved in, we decided to use a couple of kitchen cabinets for our food storage instead.

Then we were left wondering what to do with the space. We priced out knocking it out all together to create an open basement staircase, but when the insanely high bids came in we decided to nix that idea haha! So we ultimately decided to use this space as a little mudroom nook!

We started by building a bench to use for seating and storage.

We then installed shiplap and craftsman trim to dress it up.

Which brought us to where I left you guys in this post.

After much procrastination we wrapped up all of the final details and are now officially calling this space finished!

We built a shelf along the top to hold a basket for each family member to store personal items like sunglasses and hats. We followed the same process that we used to build our floating laundry room shelves.

The baskets were a Homegoods find (similar) and I just love the little handles.

The iron wall hooks that I scored from Target were actually a little bit of a splurge compared to the cheaper ones that I had originally planned on getting from Amazon. But I was head over heels with the little labels and knew that we just had to have them!

I styled the space for this post, but in real life each of us uses our hook to keep bags, coats and hats on. I’m excited that it keeps them from laying all over the kitchen table like they had been previously!

I forgot to take a picture of the inside of the cabinets but there’s a shelf along the middle so we have four spaces to store shoes.

Finding the perfect pulls for the cabinet doors was tough. I went back and forth on several that I found at Hobby Lobby and Lowes before finally deciding to order these aged iron pull bars from Amazon.

I was so excited when I took them out of the box! They did not disappoint and just so happen to coordinate with the wall hooks perfectly which of course makes my heart happy.

We decided to add these metal wall sconce lights up top in place of the metal scroll that I had there. When I first mentioned the idea that some lights would look nice above this space, Anthony started talking about how he could fish back to the basement staircase wiring. But I stopped him and said “let’s just use some wireless puck lights!

I put a bulb to outlet converter inside each one to create a flat surface for the puck lights to stick to, however I learned that the double sided stickers that they came with don’t hold up very well! Super glue works much better 😉

To cozy up the bench I made a cushion and added a pair of pillows. I shared a tutorial on how I made the no-sew removable bench cushion out of some drop cloth canvas a couple of weeks ago. It was crazy simple so be sure to check it out if you have a bench you’ve been wanting to add a cushion to! The pillows are a Homegoods find but I also have purchased these ticking pillow covers in the past for the playroom which are very similar.

One more comparison to how this view used to look compared to now…

MUCH better! Eventually board and batten (and baseboards) will be installed and this space will be looking even more polished.

One more view from the other side..

Thanks for stopping by today my friends. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

What a great way to reuse an awkward space. I’m sure it will get a lot of use and keep the clutter away from the table. Thanks for sharing at #HomeMattersParty
