DIY Blanket Scarf Christmas Pillows

December 4, 2019

Well hello there my sweet friends! I hope you all enjoyed a successful Black Friday/Cyber Monday and are getting a good start on your shopping. I ended up getting a couple of things, but I definitely feel like I’m behind compared to where I’m usually at the first week of December. I think Thanksgiving being so late this year has definitely thrown my groove off a bit!

Anyways I wanted to pop in today to share some cute Christmas Pillows that I made and a few pictures of the santa tree that we put up over the weekend.

Ok so remember at the beginning of last spring how I shared these DIY spring pillow covers?

I had full intentions of making some for summer and fall, but life happened and I never got around to it. While I was decorating our living room for Christmas I decided that it was time to put away the spring pillows and replace them with some Christmas ones!

Supplies Used: (Affiliate links may be provided for convenience.  For more info, see my full disclosure here.)

  • Blanket Scarf (similar)
  • Canvas Drop Cloth
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing Machine (this is mine and I love it!)
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing pins
  • 24″ x 24″ Pillow Inserts

If you frequent the Target Dollar Spot you’ve probably spotted these blanket scarves before.

They’re only 7 bucks and are pretty decently sized.  They only had these pink and gray ones left when I snapped that picture, but a few weeks ago I was able to snag this Christmas colored one.  I loved how soft, cozy and cheerful it was knew that it would make the perfect pillows.

I began by cutting out the fronts. Since my inserts are 24″ I cut a square at 26″ to allow a 1 inch seam allowance and a 1 inch flange around the edges.

Then I cut the two back pieces out of canvas drop cloth, each measured at 26″ x 15.” I laid them down on top of the front piece with outer sides facing each other.

I like to use the hemmed edge of the drop cloth for the edges of the envelope opening–such a time saver!

Next, I pinned around all 4 edges and ran it through the machine. Once I flipped the cover right side out, I ran them though again to create a flanged edge.

I found that this fabric kind of shrunk up on me a little bit, so instead of a 1″ flange like I had planned on originally I was only able to do a 1/4″. But I still love how they turned out!

I’m really glad that I decided to go with drop cloth for the backs because it helps them keep their shape perfectly.

They look super cute rested next to our rustic santa themed tree that we put up in the living room.

I created this tree for last year’s blog hop (you can see the full post here), but I decided to upgrade the tree itself to this amazing 6.5″ flocked tree from Walmart. It was a steal of a price and I love how much brighter it is than our old one!

I even decided to add a fun little Christmas tree train at the bottom.

The first one that we got was way too big for this little corner, and I was beginning to think that my dream of having a tree train wouldn’t work. But when we went to return it Lucas actually spotted this one and it ended up fitting perfectly!

The boys are absolutely smitten with it!

And yes–our elf Paco has been having loads of fun in this little corner!

Thanks for stopping by today my friends, I’ll be back on Friday to share the December box from Simply Earth. See you then!

I love making pillows, and keep trying new ideas. I had never thought about using the blanket scarves. I have one that I could never quite figure out how to wear, so maybe I will make it into a pillow instead! And your tree is beautiful!
