Hello friends and happy Friday to you! It was another successful week for the backyard makeover and I am excited to pop in today and share the progress with you guys!
Last week I talked about how I got started out here this post. I initially just wanted to pull out all of the weeds, but once I got rolling I just kept going!
It’s been A LOT of hard work but it feels really good to be making progress on our yard that we’ve barely stepped foot in since we’ve lived here since it was such a mess. I’ve also found it really therapeutic to be outside and enjoying the sunshine so it’s a win on both accounts!
Okay so let’s chat about what I’ve been up to this week. I mentioned that I wanted to edge the entire yard in mulch. The back corner was already edged in stone edging from the previous owner, but I couldn’t find anything similar so I was sort of stumped on what to do. After much shopping around I finally found the most adorable edging ever!
I know–I didn’t know it was possible to be this excited about edging either haha. When I first spotted this one I fell in love with the cute scalloped design. It’s totally me and is such a step up from basic edging.
I’ve never installed edging before so I was sort of nervous, but the no dig design made it super easy and I had it all laid out by the end of the weekend. I did have to run to Lowes to pick up more spiral stakes since they don’t include many. Luckily they are only 5 dollars a pack so I got few and made sure to put at least one every foot.
I had ordered some mulch to be delivered from Home Depot and I was soooo excited at the thought of it being dropped off in our driveway on Wednesday. However Tuesday morning when I checked the status I saw that they were actually out of stock and wouldn’t know when they would restock. Boooo!
So I cancelled the order and decided to just make multiple mulch runs to Walmart. It worked out for the best because I found out that it’s actually only 2 bucks there instead of 3 which makes a big difference when you’re getting as many bags as we needed. Between me and the hubby we made 4 runs and I think we will need just one more.
Yesterday I purchased a few pretty perennials and I plan to plant them today around the edges with the rock border.
Don’t mind the random log haha. Speaking of which I was thinking about turning that into a little bench for the kids. It would look so cute next to their new playhouse!
Sidenote–if you’re thinking about getting this, I noticed that the price fluctuates on it like crazy so be sure to watch it before you buy!
It actually originally looked like this:
I decided to spruce it up little bit. I had a little bit of left over left over Majic paint from when I used it on the kids play table and chairs. I was really impressed with the quality of it and since it can be used outdoors I decided to load it up in my paint sprayer and quickly sprayed the roof pieces, door and window sills before I built it.
I also added the little white picket fence on either side along with some stepping stones and potted flowers.
The boys have had a blast playing inside of it and love to turn in to a McDonalds drive through. It’s the cutest thing!
I also built the sandbox (link here) but it’s still awaiting sand. I had it on the same order as the mulch but I decided to save on the delivery fee and just make a couple trips this weekend to pick it up.
Mulch will be going all around it and I can’t wait to watch their creative little minds enjoy it.
On Saturday the hubby helped me tear out the juniper bushes which was beyond my physical strength and when he was finished he was kind enough to help me put together our old canopy!
Oh how I missed this thing! We were even able to turn the porch light socket in to an outlet with this handy adapter so when we flip the switch the lights turn on. It looks absolutely magical out here at nighttime.
I found these plaid outdoor pillows for just 5 bucks at Walmart and I really love how they spruce our old chairs up.
We have plans to build a dining table for under here, but for now it’s been nice just having it as a little hang out spot to sit together and chat after the kids go to bed.
When I think back to where this yard was at two weeks ago I’m really proud of how much I’ve been able to accomplish. It’s really starting to come together and I’m amazed at how far a little bit (…okay, a lot) of hard work has gone!
In case you’re wondering, the pallet is there because the boys like to use it to climb the tree. Eventually I want to build something a little more sturdy for them and somehow attach it to the tree because watching them climb gives me such bad anxiety, oh boys haha!
Before I go, let’s do one quick comparison between last week and this week:
