Thrifted Chairs Makeover–Round Two!

June 25, 2020

Hello friends! Sorry about the radio silence last week, I was working super hard on tearing out carpet and installing the hardwood floors upstairs so I just didn’t get around to getting a post up. It’s looking fantastic though, and I cannot wait to share it all with you guys very soon!

Okay so today’s post is a super quick and simple one, but I’m nonetheless thrilled the results!

A few years ago I found these chairs sitting out on the curb and decided to give them a little love. You can read all about the original transformation in this post.

Over the years they have come in really handy when we need extra seating, but I was starting to get tired of their look so I decided to play around with them for this month’s Thrift Store Challenge.

The Rules:

  • Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
  • There’s no monthly theme.
  • There’s no budget to stick to.

  • Paint Sprayer
  • Majic Indoor/Outdoor Paint

As a reminder this is how they looked after the first makeover. The seats that I upholstered were starting to sag and some of them had stains that I couldn’t get out. I’ve also been on a black paint kick lately since I absolutely love the way it contrasts with all of the light colors that we have in our house.

So I took them out front and set up my beloved paint sprayer and gave them a coat of Majic indoor/outdoor paint. As some of you may already know I’ve been raving about this paint since I first discovered it a few months ago because it’s super durable and has wonderful coverage. However I was a little freaked out when the first coat turned out like this!

It turns out that I had just watered it down too much when I put it in my sprayer because after letting it dry and doing a second coat they were looking much better!

I did mix in a tiny bit of black chalk paint to make sure that it adhered nicely. I like how it ended up adding a little bit of matte to the satin texture.

Originally I had planned on reupholstering the ratten seats with this striped linen fabric that I had on hand, however after holding up a bare one I fell in love with how it looked next to the black.

So I simply screwed them back on and called them done!

I am still debating on distressing them to bring out the white paint underneath but the jury is still out on that. I know that since these are chairs that we lug from place to place frequently that it would make sense since they are prone to getting scuffed up anyways. However I could always add a nice sealer to them if I decide to keep them like this.

In case you’re curious, the cute lemonade pillow was an Amazon find from a couple of years ago, but I found an equally cute option on Amazon here.

Two of them have gone back to the basement, however I liked how the one that I staged for these photos so much that it hasn’t moved from our living room haha.

And since I’ve found myself sitting on it a few times over the past week, I think it may stay here for awhile longer!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone, I’ll be back next week to FINALLY share the playroom reveal. See you all then!

And now for more thrifty goodness!

The new look for the chairs is great. It’s always fun to change things up as our styles change over time. I need to try the paint you mentioned. I haven’t used that yet and I’ve got some furniture pieces that are on my to do list.

I think this is the best look yet for your chairs, Angela! It’s amazing what paint can do and this brand stands out as a winner! Also, love that you left the seats as is and not cover them! They seem to stand out more with the natural fibers!

I love the black against the light furniture in the room with the ratan. And I especially love the piece next to the chair, all those drawers! My mom has been painting all of her dining room chairs to give them a new look too. Pinned
