Hello friends and happy Wednesday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are having a nice start to your week. Our weekend seemed to speed right by as they usually do, but it did feel somewhat productive. On Sunday the weather was super fall like so it put me in a crafty mood which was perfect since I’ve had this idea brewing in my head for awhile now.
I’m sure that by now most of you have probably seen these bright orange foam pumpkins at the Dollar Tree.
They have such a nice size and shape to them so they are a real bargain for $1. I’ve done a makeover on some before using paint (tutorial here) to help them fit in to my neutral farmhouse style better, but this time I wanted to try covering them with thrifted sweaters.
Supplies Used:(Affiliate links may be provided for convenience. For more info, see my full disclosure here.)
- Foam Pumpkins
- Paint Sprayer
- Flat White Paint
- Colored Acrylic Paint
- Thrifted Sweaters
- Hot Glue Gun
- Branches
Since I knew that the orange would probably show through the knit of the sweaters, I began by spraying them with flat white paint. I drilled some screws in to a piece of scarp wood and then placed the hole where the stem picks used to be on top so that they stayed put with the air from the paint gun.
Once they were dry, I slide the first one in to the sleeve of a white thrifted cable knit sweater. I put it in sideways and then shifted it so that the sleeve opening was at the top of the pumpkin. It did take a little bit of patience!
Next, I flipped it over and cut the sleeve off making sure to leave just enough fabric to cover the bottom.
I used the hot glue gun to secure the fabric to the bottom.
I then pushed the end of the sleeve in to the hole where the stem pick used to be.
When I went to make the second pumpkin using a brown sweater, I realized that the white paint was very visible so I went back and painted them with acrylic paints that coordinated with the sweater color better.
Once they were all wrapped, I hot glued pieces of a branch from the backyard in to each one to act as a stem. Here is how they turned out!
I set them inside my DIY wood planter box with some faux greenery and love how cozy it makes this space feel.
I’m looking forward to enjoying these all the way through Thanksgiving!
I’m officially done with fall decorating and I’m pretty stoked about how it all came together. I’m actually off right now to photograph this year’s fall home tour. I’ll have it up on the blog early next week for you guys!
Linking up to these awesome parties!
