Hey friends! Are you starting to get in to the Christmas spirit yet? I’m going to be totally honest–I don’t really feel like I am over here haha.
Things just feel a little off this year and I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because we have yet to get our first measurable snowfall which is highly unusual for Colorado. Or because our schedules have been extremely busy and hectic and every day. Regardless, I’m trying to keep up the best that I can to create that Christmas magic for the kiddos!
I thought that it would be fun to work on a couple of easy Christmas crafts to try to boost my Christmas spirit. I decided to see what I could come up with using items that I already had on hand.
I am very happy with how each of them turned out and am excited to share them with you!
1. Wood Block Gifts
For my first creation, I cut down pieces of scrap wood into squares. I also gathered a couple of different wood stains and paint choices.
I gave each one a different stain or paint color to creat some variety.
Once they were dry I tied on combinations of twine, ribbon and greenery.
Easy peasy! The combinations are endless and think I want to make a few more using different ribbons and stains.
I set them inside a crate on the fireplace but these would also look cute out on the front porch, in a tray or just sitting on a console table.
2. Sweater Knit Ornaments
For my next project I found an old cable knit sweater that didn’t fit right and a couple of clear plastic ornaments.
I used this same sweater to make a couple of these ornaments last year for our bedroom tree but decided that it could use a couple more this year. I found that using the sleeve is easiest, but you could really use any part of the sweater. I simply stuck the ornament inside the sleeve and cut off enough to cover it.
I then used a piece of string to tie it tightly around the top of the ornament and cut off the excess.
I finished it off by pulling the sweater down and hot gluing the ends to the bottom. This part can take a little bit of patience and some additional cutting, but it doesn’t need to be too perfect since that part usually isn’t even visible once it’s snuggled in the tree.
They look so cozy on our Neutral Bedroom Christmas Tree!
If you don’t have a good sweater on hand already you can always check out the thrift store to find a good candidate for a couple of bucks.
It’s a great way to make use of old sweaters and I plan to make a few more using a different sweater for next year.
3. Paper Tree Ornaments
Finally, I grabbed cardstock, burlap and some string for my last DIY.
I used a wood tree to trace out a template on the cardstock, but it’s simple enough to draw your own if you’d rather go that route. I used the template to make two cutouts, then applied a line of hot glue down the middle.
I folded each side outward to create a three dimensional tree.
I finished it up with a small square of burlap tied with string around the base and tied a string through a hole in the top.
You could always use some q-tips dipped in paint to make “ornaments” but I decided to leave mine plain.
I actually got the idea from my first ornament I ever made…when I was 4! In preschool we made a similar version using green construction paper and colorful hole punched dots. My mom still has it and hangs it on the tree every year.
It’s amazing what can be created with things that are lying around the house with just a little bit of creativity. I hope you have a wonderful day today, be sure to swing by tomorrow for some easy budget Christmas decor tips!

These are such good ideas! I love craft ideas that don’t break the bank but still result in something I can proudly display or give as a gift.
Thanks so much for joining the Grace at Home party at Imparting Grace. I’m featuring you this week–and I’m actually featuring you twice, because I couldn’t decide whether to include this post or your decor tips. I think people will enjoy seeing both posts! 🙂
