Hey friends, happy Friday! We are getting ready to head up to the mountains for a quick little camping trip and I can’t wait to get out into nature for a bit. This will also be the boys’ first time experiencing true wilderness camping (as opposed to the resort we normally go to) so I’m excited for them to enjoy the beauty of it.
Today I wanted to pop in to share two curbside furniture makeovers that I recently finished for Anthony. He has been wanting a new desk to for a while and he only had two requests–that it be made out of real wood (unlike his previous laminate one) and that it was BIG! Since he is a PC gamer, he wanted at least 3 feet of depth so that he could have plenty of room to spread out. When I spotted this one on Facebook Marketplace, I knew that it fit the bill perfectly!
In fact, we couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect!

- Sander
- Paint Sprayer
- Flat Paint in SW Tricorn Black
- Ultra Flat Polyacrylic
- Cup Pulls
- Dark Wax
I started by using my sander to sand the top down to the raw wood and scuff sand the base. I then taped off the top with garbage bags and wiped down the base well to make sure that it was clean and ready for paint. I also removed the drawer that was broken as well as the back that was in less than stellar shape.
I used my paint sprayer to give the base two coats of SW Tricorn Black in a flat finish.
Once it was dry, we moved it back inside and brought out the drawers. I sanded them all down to the raw wood to match the top of the desk.
I applied a few coats of watered-down tan paint to all of the raw wood until we got a color that we were happy with. I then sealed it all up with ultra flat polyacrylic and attached our new cup pulls.
Anthony was so excited when it was finished that he set it up before I could style it in better lighting for pictures! So bear with me on the poor lighting in his man cave haha.
I love the contrast of the wood with the black, and although I was going to originally paint the pulls black, I am so glad that we decided to leave them because it gives the whole thing a very Restoration Hardware vibe.
I also added this fun carbon fiber contact paper to the inside of the drawers. It was terribly hard to get a good photo in this lighting but trust me it looks awesome!
Once I was done with the desk, I was ready to move on to the next piece in my curbside furniture inventory. Anthony mentioned that this bookcase would be perfect for storage next to his desk, so I decided to fix it up to match.
The sides and top are laminate, so I scuff sanded those, and then fully sanded the trim pieces which are real wood.
I taped off all of the wood and then sprayed everything else with SW Tricorn black.
I wanted to warm the wood up a little so that it coordinated with the desk better, so I applied some dark wax with a wet rag.
I sealed it all up to finish it.
I’m sure it won’t stay styled like this since Anthony will probably want to display more of his video game stuff haha.
Not a bad office set for practically free, right? Since I had everything except the paint and the new hardware, this was a very budget friendly furniture update!
He still wants to add a rug, some shelves on the side and some fun lights, but this corner is looking a whole lot better than it did!
Thank you so much for stopping by today, I hope you all have an amazing weekend!

Great work! What an amazing gaming space you’ve created. . . for so little money! (Of course, the computer equipment and games are not cheap, but at least the furniture didn’t cost much!)
Thanks so much for joining the Grace at Home party at Imparting Grace. I’m featuring you this week!
