Happy Thursday everybody! Today is actually my “Friday” since I’m off work tomorrow which is a good thing because I have a lot of work cut out for me at home.
I mentioned that this past week we have been working hard installing our new floors on our entire main level. Let me tell you, it’s been one exhausting, exciting, difficult and gratifying journey! We still have quite a bit to finish up so it will be good for me to be home so I can work on some of it (at least as much as I can while I wrangle our two wild little boys!).
Today I am excited to announce my plans for this season’s One Room Challenge! In case you aren’t familiar, this is a semi-annual event hosted by Calling It Home where designers have just six short weeks to transform a room and share the good the bad and the ugly in weekly updates.
So far I have participated in two challenges–our master bedroom last fall and our master bathroom this past spring.
Both turned out even better than I had anticipated! Even though it was super stressful at times, it was also very nice having a timeline to stick to as well as a great support system from all of the other participants to help get me through it.
I had originally not planned on participating in this season but since we are replacing our floors on the entire main level, I figured that it was perfect timing to give our living room an updated look while I’m at it, right?! Therefore I am once again drawn into this fun and insane adventure!
To truly appreciate the journey that this space has been on, let me show you all some awesome throwback pictures.
This is what it looked like when we first purchased the house:
Yellowish walls, baseboards, banister…it’s safe to say that the previous owners went a little nuts with their yellow paint!
I painted the walls a light gray and all of the trim white. This is how I had it decorated those first couple of months after we moved in:
Yes I really liked teal! Here is what it looked like about one year later:
And finally, here is the latest picture of our living room that I shared yesterday for my fall home tour:
As you can tell it’s taken me some time to really figure out my style. I also wasn’t really sure of how I wanted this room to look for awhile but at last, I think that I finally have a vision!

Even though I would REALLY love to replace our dark sectional with a couple of white couches, I’ve accepted that with small messy children this one makes the most sense for now.
I know that slip covers are easy to clean but I see myself having to do it weekly with what a clean freak I am, and that’s just not something that I want to take on. I also can’t picture life without our daily snuggles and I feel like the separate couches would limit that some!
So the couch is staying but I plan to replace the rug, coffee table and wall décor.
The floors will obviously be the biggest change in this space, but the next biggest one is going to be the board and batten that I plan to add. This is the only room in the house that hasn’t received some type of wall treatment and that is just NOT okay!
Check out how pretty the board and batten looks in this room from Love Grows Wild. Totally makes the space in my opinion!

I’ve always envisioned board and batten in this room so this will be the perfect opportunity to force myself to get it done!
Our corner fireplace is super awkward and since we have never used it I would honestly love to have it removed if the budget allowed us to.
There’s really no room to build around it so I’m honestly somewhat stumped on what to do with it. The only thing that I can think of is to paint the grout a lighter color so that it doesn’t stick out quite as much. If you have any ideas I’m all ears!
I think that’s about it! Unless I decide to add more to my list, which usually ends up happening at some point. This challenge is a different from my last two because I’m not looking to create an entirely new look like I did with our bedroom and our bathroom. Just a small refresh to fix the small things that have been bugging me!
I’ll be back next week with some updates on the floors and maybe even some progress on the board and batten if I’m really lucky! Be sure to swing over here and check out what the other design bloggers have planned.
