Happy first week of March my friends! Are you as ready for daylight savings time as I am? Sure, losing that hour of the weekend is always rough but I think that having the extra daylight makes it totally worth it.
Okay so originally this week I wanted to share a nice in depth tutorial on how we painted our kitchen cabinets. However this week has been soooo chaotic that I just couldn’t find the time to put it together. So I’m saving that for next week!
Instead, I wanted to pop in today with something a little different. As I’m setting up spring decor around the house, I keep referring back to pictures of what I did last year. I usually like to switch things up from year to year, but I am struggling in a few spots so I find that looking at these old pictures is helping inspire me. I decided it would be fun to quickly share my 3 favorite styling tips that I recognize in my pictures from last year!
1. Create a Pyramid
If you’re ever stuck on where to start, place a tall object in the center and then build out from there with shorter pieces. If you don’t have a tall object you can always create one by stacking items on top of crates or books.
It can either be straight across like the dresser above, or in a group like this table. The eye is first drawn to the tallest item which is the egg tree and then moves to the sides. This type of flow is very visually appealing.
2. Symmetry
Creating symmetry is very easy to do, especially when you have two of something like these wood shutter sconces. However I try not to keep things too symmetrical, so I’ll usually use things that are different but similar in size such as the lamp and the lantern to create a symmetrical balance.
Here, I have two of the same pillow so I placed one on the chair in the corner and another on the storage ottoman on the other side. This picture doesn’t show it, but I also have another faux window frame on the other side of the T.V.
3. The Power of 3
I remember this being my first “real” decorating tip that I ever heard and it came from my grandma when I was just a little girl. I used to always help her decorate for the holidays and she would always tell me that things always look best in odd numbers, mainly three.
So when I style a table or a tray I usually group things in threes. Sometimes two items can be considered one. For instance in the tray above the book under the wooden caddy I count as one thing, the candle as a second and the basket as a third. The vase and stack of coasters are added to fill it in but notice how I still sort of have a group of three overall—-the trio of stuff that I just mentioned, the vase and the stack of coasters.
Here on the table I used three pots of tulips on the table.
And here I used the lantern filled tulips as one item, the eggs on the books as a second, and the bunny as a third. Notice that I also followed the pyramid rule here!
I hope these tips help you if you ever get stumped on how to style a space! They usually do the trick for me, although sometimes it still takes a lot of playing around to create a good balance of texture and color.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I’ll be back next week to share that cabinet painting tutorial! See ya then 🙂

My mom is the one who taught me to decorate in odd numbers. Funny how the women in our lives always find that decor tip the one to pass down. 🙂 I’m visiting from Craftastic Monday.
