She found this beauty on Marketplace and had a very specific vision of making this piece lighter to coordinate with their entryway.
I began by removing all of the existing hardware and thoroughly cleaning it.
The client wanted the base to look more modern so I drew out a straight line and used the jigsaw to remove the decorative edge. Placing painters tape down first made for a cleaner cut.
There were a few areas the were pretty badly damaged so I went over those with Bondo.
I also covered up the where the keyhole once sat since she decided to remove that.
I scuff sanded everything with a 150 grit to remove the shine and prep the surface for the paint.
I sprayed my regular primer on, although I did have a slight feeling that I would encounter tannin bleed through…
and I was right!
Whenever this has happened in the past I would just switch to a darker color. Since the a client was hoping to go with a light color, I had to do some research. Luckily I discovered that clear shellac not only works as a primer, it also prevents bleed through!
I did two coats and let it sit overnight before coming back with the paint which was the color In the Buff by Glidden and the shellac worked like a charm.
I added white burlap and trim to the drawer fronts, then sealed it all up with two coats of polyacrylic. Once it was dry I brought it inside to add the hardware and drawer paper that she picked out.
Here is how it turned out!
The whole thing turned out so beautifully and I love how well the white burlap coordinated with the paint color .
As you can see I did go with a darker color for the inside because there must have been a few spots the shellac missed and the bleed through was still coming through. I simply went down two shades on the paint strip.
Have a great weekend everyone!
