Patchwork Pillow Cover

December 9, 2015

Hello everyone! Last week when I shared my DIY Rustic Vase I mentioned that I felt like I needed something on the other side of our storage cubbies so I tossed some pillows in a basket. I loved the way it looked, but since those were our couch pillows I needed to make some new ones for this spot.

Of course I wanted to use what I already had at home instead of going to the store so I ended up with a patchwork design.

I began by cutting out 9 squares from fabric scraps.  I goofed and forgot to cut enough for a seam allowance so ended up havig to smoosh my pillows in.  I cut the squares at 6″ x 6″ for an 18″ pillow, but if I were to do it again I would cut an extra 1″ on the side of each for seam allowance.  Whoops!

For each row, I placed the first two squares together with the right sides facing and sewed a seam.

I then placed the third square down with the right sides facing (didn’t matter here since it was burlap) and sewed a seam.

Once all three rows were comleted, I sewed them together the same way.  Now it was time for the back.  I followed my same technique for an envelope pillow cover by cutting two pieces that overlap to create an 18″ x 18″ square.  This is where it really hit me that I forgot the seam allowance on the squares, so I actually had to trim these pieces down to match.

This was a tablecloth so luckily the edgeds were already hemmed for me.

I placed the pieces face down on top of the front piece then sewed around all four edges.

After popping my pillow in (well, squeezing it in since I didn’t have that seam allowance!) I was done.

I really like the Christmas tree fabric, it’s actually a dishtowl that I found at Homegoods!

They look so cute and cozy in this spot!

The squares aren’t perfectly equal but I kind of like it that way–gives it more character and fits better with our rustic Christmas theme.

The whole space definitely feels more complete now.  By the way, notice that I switched out the tall white twigs in the rustic vase for some logs?  My Dad was over this weekend and did some trimming on our tree. I was sooooo excited since  I originally envisioned logs in there to begin with until I realized they’re kind of pricey if you try to buy them!

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday, I’ll see you all Friday for my Christmas home tour! 🙂

Linking up to these awesome parties!
