Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend, ours was very low key which was exactly what we’ve needed after a few hectic ones!

Last week when I shared our Fall Home Tour I promised that I would be back this week to share the tutorials on some of the DIY items that I made this year. Today I’m sharing the art that I put in the mudroom.

I began by printing out “Fall” in a font that I liked on cardstock. I then cut it out and laid it on a piece of scrap wood that I had in the garage.

The next part took two hands so I didn’t get a picture, but I basically held the letters down as I painted around them with a foam brush. I held the paper down firmly to prevent bleeding. I still ended up with a little bit of bleeding but as you’ll see it isn’t really noticeable after the sanding step.

Once the paint dried, I went back over the entire thing with one of my favorite wood stains, Provincial by Miniwax.

I didn’t let it sit for long, I used a rag to wipe it off right away.

I let it dry for about 30 minutes and then went over everything with a rough sandpaper. I like how the white came through in some parts and the natural wood in others.

It was after this step that I stood back and noticed that something was missing. So I cut out some leaves from a piece of burlap and hot glued twine around the edges of each leaf.

Since this made everything off centered, I just cut off the excess wood on the right and it was perfect! I didn’t stain the end because I ended up liking the way the raw edge looks.

It has the perfect rustic charm that I was looking for.

Obviously it doesn’t sit on our dining table everyday, I just wanted to show you what it looks like it sunlight! I nailed a sawtooth hanger on the back and hung it in our mudroom.

Where it fits perfectly 🙂

It was super easy and only took a few minutes to make (minus dry time). And since I already had all of the supplies it cost me $0. The best kind of art!
