DIY Mug Holder

February 11, 2015

We had a big empty space above some cabinets on one side of the kitchen and it was driving me nuts. I hate empty walls!

As I mentioned in my post about cheap decor ideas, I have some cheerful plates hanging above the long stretch of cabinets on the other side, so I decided that hanging the matching mugs here would look really cool.

I started my creation over a month ago and couldn’t achieve a finish on the wood that I was really happy with. I thought, how could such a simple project be so difficult to figure out?!

Then looking out in the backyard one day, it hit me. We had some wood stakes in the ground from where the previous owners had a wire fence set up. They were the perfect degree of weathered gray and I knew they would be perfect!

I began by attaching two piece with liquid nails.

And then one long piece of lattice wood along the back to secure them together.

I purchased some hooks from Home Depot and the hubby drilled holes and screwed them in for me.

I finished it up by attaching a couple of picture hangers to the back.

When I hung it on the wall I realized that I had a problem. The way it sat on the picture hangers, it slanted forward. Like a lot. So I hammered in three nails along the bottom so it could rest on them and be level. I think I might just screw the whole piece into studs to make sure it’s really secure, but this works for now.

Here it is with the pretty mugs on it!

Isn’t this wood gorgeous? And to think it was just sitting in the backyard this whole time.

It really adds to the kitchen and fills up the space nicely 🙂 I love how the color of the wood matches the warm tones in the mugs.

Linking up to these awesome parties!
