Quick Closet Makeover on a Budget

July 17, 2020

Hi guys! I hope you all had a nice week and are ready to enjoy the weekend, I know I sure am!

This week I wanted to share the quick closet makeover that I recently did. It’s nothing major, but I’m so impressed with the difference that some paint and a few new additions made that I thought I would show you guys!

Here is what it looked like before I started:

Ok, to be fair it wasn’t normally this bad. When I took this picture we were installing the floors in our bedroom so I was keeping all of the tools in here and the laundry situation was a nightmare.

Since I had to pull everything out to do the floors I figured that it would be the perfect time to tackle the mess. It wasn’t a pretty situation in our room, this is truly a case of where things get worse before they get better!

After everything was out, I tore out the carpet and laid the hardwood floors. That alone made this closet feel like such a happier place! But I wasn’t done yet.

I decided that the chrome bars had to go so I used some left over black Majic paint to cover them up. I love this paint–it’s like chalk paint but even better! Even though it’s held up great on everything else that I’ve used it on, I added a coat of polycrylic for extra protection.

Next I painted the walls Basalt Powder by Sherwin Williams and gave the shelves a fresh coat of white paint. I have to admit, it was somewhat bittersweet to cover up the art mural that one of the boys created when we first moved in!

After attaching the baseboards this space was ready to move all of our clothes back in!

Well most of them. I did manage to purge quite a bit, so even though it still looks pretty full it definitely feels a lot lighter in here.

We replaced the old light fixture with this inexpensive black cage light and it’s crazy how much more bright it is in here now!

When it came to organization I mainly worked with what we already had, but there are a couple of new additions. The first is the simple pipe shelf that we built to hold my boots.

It’s been great having them up there and it freed up shelf space for me to store my sweaters and hoodies so that I could get rid of the laminate storage cubes that I was keeping them in previously.

Next up were these black wall hooks.

They are super convenient for holding robes, pajamas and hats. Finally I invested in these 3 compartment laundry sorters.

Not only has it made laundry simpler because it’s sorted as we go, but the little bags have handles so when you’re ready to do a load you just pick it up and go. I’m definitely kicking myself for not getting these sooner!

Like I said earlier, it’s not a drastic makeover but it’s enough to make me feel a lot less stressed when I go in here!

Eventually I plan to add a barn door, but for now I just trimmed it out and left it doorless.

This space has been such a thorn in my side for the last two years that we’ve lived here. This little transformation was much needed and I’m so happy with how it turned out!

Thanks for stopping by today, have a wonderful weekend my friends 🙂
