DIY Pillow Using a Dish Towel

March 11, 2021

Hey guys, happy Thursday 🙂 I’ve had one heck of a week and am really ready to bunker down with the family and do absolutely nothing this weekend. Especially since we are expecting a huge snowstorm here in Colorado over the next couple days. I can’t wait!

Today I wanted to pop in quickly to share how I made a pillow out of this cute dish towel that I found in the Target Dollar Spot.

I’ve noticed that they always have the cutest seasonal dish towels there and have been wanting to make a fun pillow out of one for awhile. I finally did and absolutely love how it turned out!

Supplies Used: (Affiliate links may be provided for convenience.  For more info, see my full disclosure here.)

  • Dish Towel
  • Canvas Drop Cloth
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing Machine (this is mine and I love it!)
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing pins

I began by cutting the towel in half.

I then hemmed the cut side so that it was nice and clean, although later on I added drop cloth to extend it so this really wouldn’t have mattered after all.

I needed 28″ in length for my 26″ pillow insert with a 1″ seam on either side, so I took the other piece of the dish towel and cut it in to equal halves to sew to either side.

I simply laid the pieces on top of each other and ran a seam down each one.

I then trimmed off the edges so that I had 28″ in length.

I then realized that I needed it to be wider since my insert is 16″. So I cut off strips of drop cloth and sewed them on the same way that I did the sides.

Once I had the front at the correct measurements (28″ x 18″ for a 1″ seam allowance on all sides for my 26″ x 16″ pillow insert) I measured out the back on canvas drop cloth by adding 10″ to the length, so 38″ x 18″.

I cut this in half and hemmed the edges since they will be visible on the back of the pillow.

I then placed them face down on top of the front which what face side up so that the right sides were facing each other.

I placed pins around the edges to hold it all together and then sewed along all of the egdes. When I flipped it right side out this is how it turned out!

The little bunny tail is just the cutest!

Don’t mind the cute kitty photo bomber haha.

It’s such a cute addition for spring and it’s hard to believe that it was once a dishtowel.
