Hey guys–happy end of July! I feel like the 4th was literally such a short time ago and that we simply blinked and are nearly done with the month. Where in the world did all the time go?!
Our weekends and even a few weeknights have been jam packed with fun activities so I guess the phrase “time flies when you’re having fun” comes to mind. This weekend we are headed out for a quick camping trip and then next week it will already be time to start back to school shopping and getting ready for the new school year. Just crazy!
Alright let’s get started on this month’s Thrift Store Challenge.
The Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

I usually find the best treasures at Goodwill which is only about a ten minute drive from our house, but this week I have been feeling particularly lazy so I just hopped over to the Salvation Army which is about a 5 minute drive. A huge difference right haha? As usual they didn’t have a whole lot to choose from in the home section, but I did find this little gem.
It looked like someone had hand painted the sunflowers and although they were beautiful, they didn’t fit with my style. I decided to give it a new look so that it could be loved in our home just as much as it probably once was in its old home.
Supplies Used: (Affiliate links may be provided for convenience. For more info, see my full disclosure here.)
I started by sanding down the front of the drawer to the natural wood.
Next I used some trusty Frogtape to tape the front of the drawer off and applied a couple light coats of black spray paint.
Once it was dry, I applied a coat of clear sealing wax to the raw wood. Afterwards I decided that it was a little boring so I chose to add a fun ticking stripe pattern to the drawer using some acrylic paints and Frogtape.
Since I used the wax first the tape had some trouble sticking and the lines didn’t come out super crisp. To disguise this, I decided to sand it down a little to make it look more distressed. I attached a new knob that I picked up at Hobby Lobby and this is how it turned out.
For now I have it sitting on the kitchen countertop to hold charging cables since that’s usually where we charge our items.
I added some drawer liner inside the drawer for a fun touch.
I am so happy that you could join me today, I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the week and weekend. See you all next week 🙂
And now for more thrifty goodness!
