Alright my friends, it’s One Room Challenge time again! Some of you may have noticed that the challenge actually kicked off yesterday so I’m obviously a day late to the game. Although I had planned to get this post ready Tuesday night, the universe had other plans.
Last Tuesday night Anthony went in to the ER with extreme abdominal pain and after several tests they finally discovered that his gall bladder was not working. He had emergency surgery to get it taken out and it turned out that it had actually gone gangrenous/necrotic and we are so lucky that he got in to have it taken care of when we did. Earlier this week we thought he was healing well and that the soreness was just part of the surgery, however a CT at urgent care on Tuesday found that he may have a bile leak which although rare (1/1000 gall bladder removal cases) could be serious. We spent all of Wednesday at the ER for more testing which did find a leak and were finally admitted that night and scheduled for an ERCP to put in a stent.
It has been a long and stressful journey that we aren’t quite over with yet, and as of yesterday I was 99% set on opting out of this season. Today I have decided that I am going to go ahead and jump in after all. I am hoping that having something positive to focus on will help my anxiety (that was already in a bad state) and that the happy energy helps us get through Anthony’s recovery!
I also decided to go for it since it’s a small and easy makeover space that I am going bare minimum on. It will take very little funds or time to do compared to past makeovers so this will actually be quite fun to share how I pull off!
So without further ado, let’s chat about the room that I’ll be tackling. This is a picture of our master bathroom when we first moved in, everything was completely original—even the dirty carpet!
Four years ago I participated in the One Room Challenge to give the space a budget makeover to tide us over until we could afford a full renovation which brought us to here.
The full reveal post can be found here. Everything held up pretty great for awhile, but over the last year or so things like the paint on the vanity, the concrete counters and paint on the shower have started to break down on us. A full renovation is still not in the foreseeable future, especially with thousands in hospital bills that will be soon arriving in our mailbox. But I can’t stand this room in its current state so I am going to do a budget makeover round two!
This is the mood board that I created to put all of my ideas together.
|Vanity| |Mirrors| |Wallpaper| |Floor| |Rugs| |Shelves| |Shower| |Wall Art| |Wall Hooks| |Towel Ring|
Not only am I happy to be fixing the problems, I am really looking forward to giving the space a new more bohemian vibe.
We will start with the vanity. I am going to sand my not so great paint job down and re-paint using Behr’s Cabinet and Trim enamel. I would like to go with a warm taupe color to add some interest in here. I’ll also be attempting to cover up the concrete that has become water stained in some spots with a faux marble look. Even though I wish that we were replacing it with this beauty, I’ll be using it as my inspiration!
Once the vanity is done I would like to add some wall treatment to the wall behind it. I’ve contemplated several ideas from shiplap to wainscotting, but since I would still like to do a full reno one day I think I will just stick with something more temporary like wallpaper.
Although the peel and stick vinyl tiles that I installed on the floor have held up great, I will be replacing them since the texture on them makes them extremely difficult to clean.
I still need to look at these in person to make sure that we don’t have the same issue, but so far I’m loving the pattern.
I’ll be doing away with the large builder grade mirror that I framed and replacing it with these to bring us a little more up to date.
I am also going to swap out where the shelves and towel hooks are.
So I’ll take down the pipe shelves and put something more simplified like these above the toilet.
And then the towels will be hung above the tub with some bohemian hooks.
And finally, I’ll tackle the shower. The black spray paint held up well for quite a long time, and it still looks fantastic from the outside.
However the inside is a whole different story. I’ll spare you the gross pictures, but trust me when I tell you that it’s BAD. If we could afford to replace only one thing in this space this would definitely be it! But I am going to try my best to clean it as well as I can, re-caulk and do a new coat of spray paint in the bad spots.
I am so excited to get in here and get started! I will be back each week to update you on the progress 🙂
