Vaughn Bassett Nightstands Makeover

September 22, 2023

Hello everyone, happy Friday!

When I flipped my first pair of nightstands earlier this year I told myself that I would never do it again because it was so exhausting to repeat processes on two separate items, especially since I ran into so many issues! But when I spotted these on Marketplace for a fair price I just couldn’t resist getting them…

Check out those pretty shaped bases! They were made by Vaughn Bassett although they were a little beat up, I knew that they had great quality structure and would look so beautiful with an updated look.

Supplies Used:(Affiliate links may be provided for convenience.  For more info, see my full disclosure here.)

  • Sander
  • Bondo
  • Enamel Paint
  • Paint Sprayer
  • Stain
  • Ultra Flat Polyacrylic
  • Pulls
  • Knobs
  • Contact Paper

I started by removing the hardware and cleaning them up with Simple Green.

Next I brought out my sander to strip sand the tops and the bases and scuff sand everything else.

I would have liked to save the wood on the drawer fronts, however the wood was a completely different shade than the rest—even though you can’t tell in this blurry screeenshot! The thought of it not matching once stained made me nervous.

The next day I cleaned off the sanding dust then taped off the tops and bases to get it ready for primer. I also went ahead and stained the wood so that I wouldn’t get stain on the paint.

The following day I came back in with paint, which was a custom mix that I created using my Behr enamel paints.

As always I sanded between coats with a fine grit to creat a smooth finish. After the final coat I was a mixture of excited and nervous to see how the stain paired with the paint.

I slowly peeled back the plastic to find that it was perfect and so, so pretty! I sealed it all up with two coats of polyacrylic, again sanding between costs.

I popped on some black knobs and lined the drawers with pretty paper and here is how they turned out!

I love how creamy the neutral paint color paired with the rich warm color of the stain.

The drawer paper had a fun boho vibe that went perfectly with the paint color.

They were very quick to find a happy new home!
