I actually picked up two items on my most recent thrift store excursion. I had to eeny, meeny, miny, moe which one of them to work on to share for this month’s challenge! I will hopefully be done with the other one before the March challenge and will share it with you guys in the next week or so. Maybe. I’ve been easily sidetracked these days haha.
Anyways, meet this month’s lucky contestant!
I always seem to stumble upon several magazine holders each time I visit the thrift store–they are like a staple item that you’re almost always guaranteed to find! I usually pass them by, however when I spotted this one I decided that I really liked the spindles and scalloped edges. So even though I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do with it, I went ahead and brought it home and started working on it.
Supplies Used:(Affiliate links may be provided for convenience. For more info, see my full disclosure here.)
- Latex Paint (SW Versatile Gray)
- Plaster of Paris
- Printed Image
- 1/4″ Plywood
- Mod Podge
- Liquid Nails
I began by using an allen wrench to remove the handle since I didn’t really care for the shape of it.
Next, I mixed up some plaster of paris and a sample pot of SW Versatile Gray that I had on hand to create DIY chalk paint and applied two coats.
It sat like this for about a week while I brainstormed what I should do next. Since spring is near (hopefully…) I decided that this would make the perfect vintage themed flower market basket. So I whipped up an image on Canva, printed it out and grabbed a piece of 1/4″ plywood from my stash.
I brushed some Mod Podge on to the plywood, pressed my image on top, and then coated the top of it with some more Mod Podge.
Once it was dry, I cut all four edges down on the miter saw and lightly sanded the edges.
To make it look a little more worn and to disguise the small bubbles that didn’t smooth very well, I dry brushed some Versatile Gray over the top. Finally, I used Liquid Nails to secure it to the front.
This is how it turned out!
I chopped the sides off on the miter saw since they looked out of place without the handle.
I placed some burlap inside along with some pretty spring stems that I scored from Joanns. They were already 40% off and I used my 20% mobile coupon on top of that so I got them for such a steal!
I noticed while I was editing these pictures that the sign is not centered. Shoot. I attached it as we were heading out the door to go to Waffle House, so I guess I can blame it on hunger!
It’s going to drive me absolutely nuts now that I noticed it, so I will totally be popping off and re-attaching it as soon as I get a chance to.
If I weren’t already craving spring before putting this together, I REALLY am now!
I will be busting out my spring decor from storage this weekend! For me spring always commences as soon as we hit the month of March despite the fact that we usually get quite a bit of snow all the way through April or later here in Colorado.
