It’s that time again! Once a month I team up with my blogging friends to create a new decor piece using thrifted items and it’s always sooo fun and inspiring to see what everyone comes up with. We took a break over the holidays, but we are back and excited to start off the new year!
The Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

- Krud Kutter
- Rust-Oleum Oil Rubbed Bronze Spray Paint
- Latex Paint
- Valspar Dark Sealing Wax
- Microfiber Cloths
I picked up this large candle holder and small wooden plate at Goodwill for only 2 bucks each. Sometimes I’ll pick things up without a clue of what I am going to do with them, but not this time. I knew exactly what I wanted to make!
After cleaning both items with Krud Kutter to remove the dirt and grime, I started by spraying the candle holder with Rust-Oleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint. It was already a similar color but was a little chipped up. I know that normally I dig that look, but this time I wanted it to look nice and clean.
For the plate, I started with a coat of black since I knew that rubbing the wax in later on may peel some of the white top coat off.
I gave it two coats of white and then went back over it with dark wax to give it a weathered aged look. I also left some of it in the rim since I liked the depth that it added.
I’ve heard wonders about Loctite super glue so I decided to give it a shot. I was actually really impressed with how well and quickly it worked!
I ran a small line of glue along the edge of the candlestick and then pressed the plate on top, making sure that it was nice and centered.
After just a couple minutes of letting the glue set it was ready for some decor!
I found that this clay pot (also a thrifted from years ago) fits perfectly.
I filled it with a flocked pinecone pick and some burlap.
You can see that on the edges the white paint peeled back slightly as I had a feeling that it would. I absolutely love the character that it adds!
I am always finding myself needing something to create visual height and although books almost always work, I like how different this is.
I’m sure this little piece will be getting a lot of use around here!
I really like how the dark bronze pairs with couple of dark accents I have on this wall such as the frame and buffalo check pillow.
And now for more thrifty goodness!
Linking up to these awesome parties!

I love putting some height on my decor and this is a great idea. The wax looks so good on the top of the plate. It’s beautiful!

Usually the simplest design of found items turns out to be the best or favorite piece! And there are so many possibilities using or displaying your beautiful stand! I’m loving it!

I love the new look you gave these pieces. It’s always fun to find items at a thrift store that we can change up to match our decor.

Wow Angela I really love this — I’ve seen many DIY’d stands but I think this one is the best by far! I absolutely love your farmhouse look and warm winter decor. I would kill for that cabinet! xokathleen

This is awesome! I have always been looking for a decent looking cake stand, but all that I can find are glass ones that I’m afraid will break. I’m positive I have similar stuff in my thrifting stash that I could use to make one of these – thanks for the inspiration 🙂

Love the two contrasting colors of the stand, the wax makes the distressing so easy and it has the perfect farmhouse look.
