Hello there friends, I hope you’re all enjoying the first days of fall! Here in Colorado the temperatures are starting to drop a little bit and some leaves are already starting to fall, which has made our after dinner walks absolutely beautiful.
Okay let’s dive right in to this month’s Thrift Store Challenge!
The Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

If someone asked me to name my favorite thing to get from a thrift store, I would have to say without a doubt that it’s furniture! I love how easily an old forgotten piece can be turned into something brand new, not to mention it’s so much more satisfying to add a new piece for just a few dollars compared to a couple hundred. Come to think of it, we actually have very few pieces of furniture that were purchased brand new!
It’s been awhile since I’ve done a furniture flip, so this week when I went to the thrift store I cruised down the furniture aisle and that’s when I spotted this cute wood cabinet.
It was made out of real wood and in excellent condition so I hauled it up to the register and brought it home!
Supplies Used:(Affiliate links may be provided for convenience. For more info, see my full disclosure here.)
- Frog Tape
- Masking Paper
- Flat Latex Paint
- Paint Sprayer
- Medium Grit Sandpaper
- Weathered Oak Stain
- Dark Walnut Stain
- Sealing Wax
I began by taking off the knobs, feet and door and then wiped it all down with some Simple Green. I then taped off the top of the cabinet and the inside of the drawer with some Frog tape and masking paper.
Next, I set up my paint sprayer and got to work! I mentioned to you guys last month that I had to purchase a new sprayer and I am still so impressed with this one! I feel like it gives much better coverage and the clean up is much easier than the old one.
After three light coats I removed the tape and paper and began to sand the top.
I would normally use my electric sander, but since my father in law is currently borrowing it I went ahead and just did it by hand. Thankfully it was a small surface and didn’t take too much time or effort!
I ended up doing my classic combination of Weathered Oak and Dark Walnut followed by a couple coats of white wash.
While the stain was drying, I went back and lightly distressed the edges of the cabinets with some medium grit sandpaper.
Finally, I sealed it with a coat of my favorite sealing wax.
I reattached the feet and door and then added some new knobs before calling this beauty done!
You may recall that I usually keep a small round white table in this little corner. I decided to try this out there instead and I think I like it!
Anthony noticed it right away (which is very surprising for him!) and he questioned where it came from immediately. He was shocked when I told him it was a $10 thrift store find!
He also said that he liked the contrast that it provides the space compared to what was there before.
The new knobs definitely add some nice charm. Since knobs are on sale this week at Hobby Lobby they were only $2 each!
I’ve yet to fill it up with anything, but I’m sure I’ll find the perfect thing to store inside it eventually. Perhaps board games?
I’m so happy you could join me today, have a wonderful rest of the week!
And now for more thrifty goodness!
Linking up to these awesome parties!

The cabinet top colors are an absolutely gorgeous combination! Your piece looks like it’s from the 90’s Broyhill Fontana line. Love your makeover!
