One Room Challenge (Week 3): Painting the Cabinets

April 20, 2022

Hey guys, welcome to week 3 of the One Room Challenge! It has been a slow start this season but this week I finally feel like I’m starting to get moving in here. Thank goodness this is just a refresh and not a full-blown makeover because I would be so behind!

In case you missed any previous posts in this challenge I will link them here for you to catch up:

  • One Room Challenge (Week 1): Kitchen Refresh Plans
  • One Room Challenge (Week 2): Choosing a Cabinet Color

Last week I mentioned that I was trying to decide on a color for the lower cabinets and I am so happy to announce that I chose Alaskan Skies by Benjamin Moore.

It’s a nice warm neutral that doesn’t have any undertones and is exactly what I have been envisioning for our lower cabinets.

After our Easter brunch on Sunday my little assistant helped me take everything out of the drawers so that we could remove them and get them ready for paint.

We also took off all of the doors and my assistant helped me label them so that we remembered which one went where.

Monday, I woke up with an excruciating migraine that put me down the entire day which was a total bummer. I’m able to function through them sometimes but this one was on another level and there was no way I was getting anything done.

By Tuesday morning I was ready to bounce back and get started. I began by scrubbing everything down really well with warm soapy water.

Once all of the dirt and grime was off, I quickly went over each piece with my sander to rough it up which would allow the new coat of paint to adhere nicely.

By the afternoon I was finally ready to paint! I used my paint sprayer to give the backs of the doors and the drawers two coats of paint.

I let them dry about two hours between coats and used a fine grit sandpaper to smooth imperfections before adding the second coat.

I know that the color looks pretty white in these photos because of the sun, and I was a little alarmed myself when it first went on! However, when I brought a door inside, I realized that it is the perfect shade–not too light and not too dark.

Today I am going to work on the fronts of the doors and also begin to tackle the frames. I am hoping that by this weekend we have everything put back together and are ready to move on to the next phase.

Speaking of the next phase, I originally was going to do the wood beam next, but I think I am going to do the upper cabinet boxes instead since they may be a little more time consuming. As mentioned previously, I want to build up the cabinet with boxes like these ones that Sarah from Thrifty Decor Chick built.

Also, you see how she actually built in her fridge by extending that cabinet set forward? I love how that looks and think I am going to try to add that to the project list!

Thanks for stopping by today, I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week and I’ll be back with some more fun updates next week 🙂
