One Room Challenge (Week 4): Built-Ins and Shiplap in the Window

October 20, 2021

Hello friends! Well it’s official–we have reached the halfway point for the One Room Challenge. I can hardly believe it! I feel like this season has been flying by at rapid speed. I suppose that it doesn’t help that October is always such a busy month for us. In case you’ve missed any of the fun along the way you can catch the previous posts from the challenge here:

  • One Room Challenge (Week 1): Living Room Plans
  • One Room Challenge (Week 2): The Fireplace
  • One Room Challenge (Week 3): Beginning the Built-Ins

Last week I mentioned that I built the bases for the built-ins but I was stalled because I was waiting on the cabinets to arrive. So I decided to move on to installing shiplap in the window nook. I began by ripping out the old window sill and trim and replacing it with MDF as I have done with the other windows in our house.

Once that was installed I began on the shiplap. I didn’t snap any photos along the way, so hopefully these screenshots from my time lapse videos give you an idea of how it is starting to look.

I added quarter round trim along the top and in the corners and I really like how it frames it in. Once I trim out the entire space with craftsman trim it’s going to look soooo good! I ordered some new blinds and will paint the inside of the window before I install them.

On Saturday I received an exciting text message from Home Depot letting me know that my cabinets had arrived–a few days early! So Sunday morning we picked them up and got right to work. We started by cutting out some of the backs so that we could have access to the wall outlets and to get good airflow.

Then we carefully cut out the center of the doors since we plan to replace them with decorative aluminum screening.

We also made a cut in one of the sides so that we could reach a wall outlet. Here’s how the first one looked when we were all finished with the cuts.

We secured them to the base from the inside of the cabinet using some 1×3 MDF pieces on the bottom.

I plan to do a more detailed tutorial at some point to stay tuned for that! As of today they are about 90% done and I just need to add the aluminum screening and the butcher block tops.

Well and paint of course!

In other exiting news, the fabric swatches from Home Reserve arrived for our new sectional! I’ve kept them on the coffee table so that I could see them in here during different times of the day. The cat has enjoyed sitting on them and batting them around haha…

After a lot of thinking, I think we have decided to go with our initial instinct which is Archetype Quartz (top left). It’s a nice mixture of gray and brown and I think it’s going to provide just the right amount of contrast against the floors and walls.

I am going to take some measurements this week so that I can get our order in. The shipping turn around is only 10-15 days so we shouldn’t have too wait too long which is nice.

By next week I am hoping that I can share the finished look of the built-ins and the beginnings of the shiplap wall. Have a great rest of the week! 🙂
