One Room Challenge (Week 5): Shiplap Wall

October 27, 2021

And just like that we are at the 5th week of the One Room Challenge! It really is flying by soooo extremely fast. Things are finally coming together and it’s getting exciting to see my vision start to really play out.

All of the previous weekly post updates can be found here:

  • One Room Challenge (Week 1): Living Room Plans
  • One Room Challenge (Week 2): The Fireplace
  • One Room Challenge (Week 3): Beginning the Built-Ins
  • One Room Challenge (Week 4): Built-Ins and Shiplap in the Window

Last week I mentioned that I was getting close to being done with the built-in benches. I am happy to report that they are D-O-N-E!

I put some temporary pillows up but I need to go pillow shopping to find the perfect ones. I’m thinking something with a lot of contrast and pattern to really draw the eye in and cozy it up.

I used a scrap piece of the butcher block to test out different stain and whitewash combinations to achieve a nice match to the floors. I ended up doing a coat of whitewash followed by a coat of Weathered Oak just as I did on our steps.

I sealed them with two coats of matte polycrylic on all four sides so that they don’t warp.

I contemplated adding cushions but I don’t think I want to cover this beauty up!

This week I also worked on the shiplap on the back wall. I giggled when we took the TV down and saw the big patch of green paint that I never got to.

It went fairly quickly since there were very few weird cuts to make.

The next step will be to build a new fireplace mantle and I’m going to need to wrap it around the brick like the one that was there previously so that will be a little more tricky than I originally anticipated, but I’m sure it will look fantastic once done.

In other news I finally submitted the order for our new sectional! I chose the Ali model from Home Reserve because I like the unique and dramatic slope of the arm.

I ordered two extra pieces so that we can either do 4 seats on one side and 2 seats on the other or 3 and 3. I am not one hundred percent sure that it will be here in time for the reveal since they are experiencing shipping delays but I guess we will have to wait and see.

I did pick out some new accent chairs that I am absolutely smitten with! They were the last two in stock at this new store that just opened up not too far from us (At Home) so I took it as a sign that they were meant to come home with me.

I set the wicker ottoman between them temporarily but I would like to find a nice accent table. I got one that I like at Hobby Lobby but I am going to keep shopping around a bit until I decide for sure.

This upcomming week I hope to finally install the blinds and also start on the board and batten. I hope you all have a great Halloween and I will update you guys next week!
