One Room Challenge (Week 5): Vanity Trim and Accent Wall

May 3, 2023

Welcome to week 5 of the One Room Challenge! This past week has been a wild one and I didn’t make a huge amount of progress, but I did get a little bit done which is better than nothing! In case you have missed any of the previous posts in this challenge you can catch them here:

  • One Room Challenge (Week 1): Master Bathroom Plans
  • One Room Challenge (Week 2): Starting the Vanity Makeover
  • One Room Challenge (Week 3): More Vanity Progress
  • One Room Challenge (Week 4): New Floors (and a new counter!)

After last week’s update I started adding the trim along the bottom of the vanity. As you may recall, we have a basic builder grade vanity that looked like this along the bottom.

Typically, there is a piece of vinyl molding along the front, however I removed that and had replaced it with a piece of MDF during the first makeover. I wanted to take it up a notch this time around, so I got some boards and drew out a design that I wanted to carve out to make it look like a freestanding vanity.

I had Anthony use the jigsaw to cut it out since he is usually a bit more precise (and patient) than I am.

I then cut down some spacers from a 2×4 and secured the boards to the front.

I added a piece of decorative molding along the top and was so excited to see my crazy vison start to come to life!

(In case you’re wondering about the side, I cut out a messy hole a few weeks ago so that when the trim went on it would look like it was just sitting on the base)

Once everything was spackled and caulked, I went over it with two coats of paint to match it to the rest of the vanity.

And that is about where I stopped for the week. I took Friday off celebrate my birthday which was absolutely wonderful. The hubby and I enjoyed the day together while the boys were at school, and when we came home from dinner, he surprised me with a party at the house.

I was looking forward to sleeping in on Saturday morning and then enjoying the day with my mom, however I woke up to a very sick Lucas who had come down with a nasty stomach bug. It was pretty bad all weekend, so the room makeover got pushed aside.

While he was napping on Monday evening, I decided to start on the accent wall. I first spent some time figuring out where to put the battens so that they were evenly spaced around the light that I wanted to add and the entire wall. After a lot of trial and error I finally got it!

I took notes on the measurements, then began cutting down the hardboard panels and securing them to the studs.

The following day Lucas’ illness had progressed so badly that I had to take him to urgent care because he became so dehydrated. Because of his abdominal pains and abnormal labs, they became concerned of appendicitis being a possibility. We were transferred to the children’s hospital by ambulance, and it was quite a scary/stressful few hours.

Thankfully his ultrasound was clear, and after some more fluids and pain meds he was good to come home. While he continued to rest on the couch with probably his 30th movie for the week, I added the MDF battens. Here is where we are at today!

I am eager to see how it all looks painted with the new mirrors and light installed. I should be able to wrap that up this week, and by next week we should be ready to start working on the dreaded shower. Catch up with you all next Wednesday! 🙂
