Hello and happy 2022! I hope these first few days have been treating you all well so far and you are ready to take on the new year. I find that once we get to January, I feel most inspired to declutter and organize our home. Maybe it has to do with taking down all of the Christmas decor or possibly because of the concept of new beginnings that come with the start of a new year. I know that a lot of others feel the same way so I thought that this week it would be fun to share my favorite organized spaces in our home.
I went through each of these on Instagram stories and saved them to a Highlight, but I wanted to share them here as well in case you missed it. I hope that these spaces help inspire and motivate you to get your homes fresh for the new year ahead!
1. Cabinets Under the Kitchen Sink
The cabinets under our kitchen sink have always been an area that I’ve struggled with. I can even recall back to my early apartment days and remember what a mess that spot has always been!
I finally decided that I had enough of not being able to find what I’m looking for so I invested a little bit of money to come up with an organization system that works.
You can catch the full post that I did here, but I basically used a system of Plastic Shoe Drawers, Narrow Acrylic Bins and Amber Plastic Spray Bottles to give everything it’s own special spot.
It looks pretty and to me that’s super important for keeping up with a space. If it looks nice I am more inclined to keep it that way haha!
2. Laundry Room Shelves
When we first moved in to this house one of our first projects was removing the builder grade wire shelving in the laundry room and replacing it with our own DIY wood shelves. However I was never very successful with keeping them organized until I decided to come up with a good system.
I purchased some Large Glass Canisters and some more Amber Plastic Spray Bottles to hold all of our laundry essentials and put them on the bottom shelf to keep them in easy reach.
I also used these awesome Wire Baskets to hold various odds and ends like the iron, sewing items and our dog’s leashes and coats.
I shared a full post on this space here.
3. Food Storage Containers and the Spice Drawer
When we completed our DIY Kitchen Makoever a few years ago I was so excited about how pretty the new white cabinets looked that I didn’t put much thought in to organizing them on the inside. That cabinet to the right of the stove was the absolute worst!
I had the spices haphazardly sitting on the top shelf so they were constantly falling down, and our collection of mismatched food storage bins made it difficult to find matching lids and bottoms. Something had to be done!
First, I decided to take the spices down and move them to a drawer. I purchased this expanding spice rack which is just about one of the coolest inventions I’ve ever seen. It adjusts to fit your drawer perfectly and is made out of very sturdy steel.
I also purchased this set of spice jars that even comes with labels. The labels are made out of a vinyl so they are easy to clean and included every possible spice that I could think of. I used the ones that we needed and then kept the others in case we decided to expand our cooking skills one day and get more haha!
It’s so nice having this drawer next to the stove because we can easily slide it in and out as we are cooking.
With the spices now in order it was time to do something about the food storage bins. I wish I would have snapped a picture because it was a total mess! I ditched all of our old pieces and got this 40 piece set from Target.
It’s very affordable and nothing fancy but has all of the sizes that we need. I set the bottoms on the bottom shelf and then the lids on the middle shelf. I can’t even begin to tell you how much frustration has been saved by finally having a matching set haha!
Both of these systems were total game changers for us in the kichen.
4. Linen Closet
And finally, the dreaded linen closet! This was another area that I felt was pretty unorganized in every apartment or home I’ve ever been in. When we moved into this house, I crammed a few baskets in there, but nothing was easy to find. When I was laying the hardwood floors upstairs, I also decided to replace all of the doors, including the linen closet door. Here is a quick photo that I snapped with my phone.
I decided to replace it with this beautiful French Bi-Fold Door that I had been eyeing for a while, however since you could see through it, I knew that something had to be done with the mess inside.
I sorted everything into a few new baskets and just like that we finally had an organized linen closet!
I used water hyacinth baskets (similar), rope baskets with leather handles and large linen storage bins and then stacked our spare towels in the empty spaces. Not only is it nice to finally have a special spot for everything, it looks pretty through the glass.
I shared a full post on the linen closet here.
So there you have it, my absolute favorite organized spaces in our home! I’m so glad that you could join me today and I hope this post helped inspire you. I still have a few areas that I want to organize and declutter a bit this year and look forward to sharing the results with you all here. Have a happy weekend!
